What to do in Balboa Island

Balboa Island Boat rentals

Newport Beach is known for beaches, surfing, as well as shopping. It offers a plethora of things to do, the top attraction being Balboa Island. This was originally a sandbar developed by William S. Collins. Eventually, it was turned into an island between 1905 and 1913. Now it is home for 3000 people, but offers the chance for visitors to enjoy throughout the weekends and holidays. One of the best things to do on Balboa Island is to head to a Boat Rentals provider and spend a day on around the island.

Take The Ferry

Be sure to plan how you will reach Balboa Island. This can either be by road or ferry. The ferry is a fun experience and definitely worth the drive. You can split the time and go the ferry one way and drive the other if you choose.

Learn the History of the Island

Balboa Island is right next to Newport Beach and there are a lot of celebrities who have called it their holiday destination. For example, Shirley Temple, John Wayne, and many others used to visit Balboa Island. This can also be learned about at the museum found on the island’s main street, Marine Ave.

Rent a Boat

Since Balboa Island is located in Newport Harbor, you cannot visit without renting a boat. The best way to see the area is on the water. You can rent a Duffy boat and enjoy your drinks as well as a nice picnic while on the water. You do not need a boating license to pilot a Duffy boat which is great. Just jump on with anywhere from one to 12 passengers and enjoy an incredible day on the water.

Have Fun

The Balboa Fun Zone is a unique seaside amusement park. It offers rides, games, and lots of junk food. It is a fun spot for families, dates, or friends to spend time. One of the best parts of it is the Ferris wheel. It has existed since 1936 and provides incredible views of the ocean, so it is a definite must ride. Go to the arcade and enjoy old fashioned games, or grab yummy carnival food. Here you can find burgers, corn dogs, ice cream, and even deep fried twinkies.

Do not forget to go to the historic Balboa Pavilion. This is a building filled with so much history and is set up in a Victorian-style building. It was completed in 1906 and is a great spot to congregate by, or go to at night where it is lit with over 1,500 lights.
